Manufactured homes are safe
Traditional housing may not be built as well as manufactured homes. Many States do not have good regulations on the building of homes.
The federal government regulates the construction of manufactured housing. Since 1976, manufactured homes have been required to comply with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) manufactured housing construction and safety standards, which cover a wide range of safety requirements, including fire safety. The HUD program also oversees the enforcement of the construction standards working through private inspection agencies and State governments.
HUD Manufactured Home Construction Standards
All Manufactured Homes must have a label that is the manufacturer's certification that the home section is built in accordance with HUD's construction and safety standards. HUD standards cover manufactured home design and construction, strength and durability and body and frame requirements. They also cover fire-resistance and energy-efficiency electrical, fire safety and other aspects of the home. It also prescribes the performance standards for the heating, plumbing, air conditioning, thermal, and electrical systems. They are published in the Code of Federal Regulations at 24 CFR 3280. Traditional homes do not have this Federal and State protection.
